I have the worst creative block ever, and on top of that I'm homesick! It makes it really hard to get any work done, but at least I've managed to teach myself how to make gif's. And finally got to finish this little stop-motion that I've had in the back of my head a couple of years. (And why did I not do it before, like in iMovie or something, you say? My iMovie stopped working, and I'm not able to fix it!)

From sketch to drawing on the stone - not exactly what I wanted it to look like, since I hardly ever draw anymore.

From test prints to nearly finished print - at this point I was so worn out from rolling the ink over and over again, that I just had to call it a day.

Next up in printmaking is lithography - a technique where you draw or paint on a stone. I prepared my stone today, grinding it for over an hour. So I'm a bit anxious to draw on it, knowing that once I start it is impossible to erase it! At least I made a half decent sketch in photoshop, so we'll see how it goes..

I'm finally here! In Rotterdam, for my exchange at Willem de Kooning Academy. For my minor I'm doing printmaking, which basically means I have one day a week where I get to learn all the printing techniques I want. I started off with silkscreening, since that is something I know - but screenprinting on paper is quite different from printing on textiles. The best thing is, you can get much more detailed images and it is much quicker! Here is my first print:

After being without my macbook for 11 days, I finally got it back to day! So here comes some photos from the exhibition, at last. All my prints up on the wall, ready for the opening:

The opening was a big success! Thanks to all of you who came, and for all the nice feedback we got.
And for those who still haven't seen it, you can drop by Norsk Trikotasjemuseum (an old knitting-factory!), it will be there until September. And don't forget to take a tour around the museum as well, it's very interesting to see!

I'm part of a group exhibition called Far Out Oddity, opening on the 28th of May.
So there's lots of things to do! Planning the exhibition, sending out invitations and most importantly - making something to exhibit! This is what I'm working on at the moment, a series of "portraits" showing garments worn by strong women from my own family. I want to use surface patterns that are easy to relate to, in order to connect with the viewer and create new stories.

I have applied to go on exchange next semester! Reykjavik, Rotterdam, Groningen and Dublin are the places I might end up going to. The art academy in Reykjavik is number one on my wish-list, and I sent them a printed version of my portfolio. I had been meaning to try out book-binding for quite some time , and decided to give it ago. The portfolio is cut with a great big machine we have in printmaking. It cuts through the entire book at once, saving me a loads of work and time! Then the book is simply glued together in the spine. Easy, and gives an almost perfect result!

The course I'm taking now is called Graphic Concrete. It's so different from what I usually do, which is great! We work in groups, and are going to make proposals for outdoor art pieces. If we are lucky, it might even be realized in the end. Anyhow, this is the first test my group made for one of our ideas - the intention is to have the image digitally printed onto glass, before we cast it into concrete blocks and integrate them at the site.

On Friday we had an open day at the art academy, and I decided to make some prints just for fun! You might remember these sketches that I did during xmas, now I finally got the photo silkscreened onto fabric. I used two screens, one for the rasterized photo and another one for the plain colours. Still, this is just a test-print, not at all the result I'm aiming for.

I'm finally back with a new post! The last weeks of the semester was very busy, I practically lived in the workshop. Now I'm ready to start another semester, and I'm still working on the portrait of my great grandmother Julie. Before xmas I got to do loads of testing, but there is still plenty to research and develop before I know where the project is going.

Sometimes it's really important to take a break from what you are working with, then come back to it and see it with new eyes. That's why I also have several other projects at the same time, like the one you see here. This is a sketch for something I might want to silkscreen print in layers. It's a different way of using photography in my work, by combining elements from several images to one composition.

I made this dress a couple of months ago, and I'm so pleased with it that I wear it all the time. The fabric is from a charity shop, soft cotton knit and I just love the floral print! I started out with a vintage sewing pattern for a girl's dress, that I got from my auntie Helga. But ended up changing the pattern as I went along, and basically drafted the whole dress my self. I think it's my most comfortable dress, so I might make a few more -and maybe I'll even make some that I can sell.

I have always liked coins with nice illustrations on. So I took a few old ones and made some earrings! I have used the old Norwegian 1- and 10-"øring", and the Danish 2-"øring". The coins are from the 60s and 70s, are are not in use anymore. I really love the pairs with the squirrel and the wasp. And now I hope I can find a pair of old 1 NOK's, they had a horse on one side and were really nice...

After looking for a suitable shorts pattern for ages, I decided to make my own! So I drafted a pattern from my favorite shorts, added some freehand changes and adjusted a bit as I went a long. Turned out just the way I wanted! The fabric is 100% wool, bought for 20 NOK / 2 GBP at Fretex (a charity shop). Perfect for cold and rainy days in Bergen, summer or winter...

I have a part-time job in a small designer shop on "Bryggen" in Bergen. During the summer I also work full-time while the owner is on vacation. One of the great things about working there is that I get to sell my own designs in the shop! Right now I'm working on a collection of bags, made out of old fabrics. All the bags are made reversible, one side with pattern and one plain. I enjoy unusual combinations of colors, and all the bags are "one of a kind". Above is a random selection to show you the variety - what do you think?

Now I just need to order some metal tags with my brand name "by petch", before I can display them in the shop. So in a couple of weeks (hopefully) you can buy my bags from Sanseliv.

Screen printed pictures on sateen, hand-colored inspired by the coloring of b/w photos from the 50´s. I wanted to manipulate the atmosphere in the photo with my use of colors, and in that way lead the viewer towards an untold story. A picture paints a thousand words, so there are always more than one story in a photo. We all get different associations, and they will affect the way we see things. Which story you want to see, is up to you.

Sometimes when i just cant sleep, i spend hours exploring photoshop. And once in a while I end up with results I actually kind of like. Like these:

WARHOL-INSPIRED MONO PRINT:

During a two-week long print course I decided to challenge my self to do at BIG mono print. Mono prints are painted with water colour dyes, directly on to the silk screen and then printed with a clear print paste. It can only be printed once, therefore the name "mono" print. The print is based on a photo of my mother from 1969, but I have simplified it a lot so I don´t think it looks like the photo anymore. I did a number of small tests first, trying out different styles and colours. Finally I ended up with 3 large prints; a red, a blue and the yellow one you see here:

The blue and the green print are a couple of the smaller test I did, before starting the big pieces.
The final prints are approximately 140 x 100 cm, printed on cotton.

ALMOST SPRING:

I bought the fabric a while ago from a secondhand shop. It used to be a pillow case, and I bought it because I liked the retro print. And finally I turned it into a simple a-line skirt, perfect for sunny spring days! I drafted a quick pattern from a skirt I had already, and did some final fitting as I went along.

COLOUR IN SPACE:

This week we have been working with colours, and the last two days we got to explore colour and space. We could choose to create a pleasant or an unpleasant mood. I wanted to make the toilet more "pleasant" and friendly, and used coloured paper and light to get a warm and welcoming feeling. I also had balloons hanging from the ceiling, nice words written on the toilet paper and happy music!

The song I chose to play was "Happy up here", a new single from the Norwegian band Röyksopp. I think the music worked very well with the atmosphere in the room, and I also love the contrast between all the the red/pink and the few blue details (that are not showing in the photos because of the red light...).

Today i bought my very first Moleskine sketchbook. Finally I have a sketchbook that´s small enough to carry around with me, great if I get ideas when I´m out and about. Anyone up for coffee and brainstorming?

In the background you can see the bag that I printed on Friday. The print is an illustration showing simple steps of a 1960´s boob-job.

I love old photos, and this is one of my favorites. It´s a childhood photo of my mother, her two brothers and their cousin. And of course the cow. Just look at the cow, it´s huge! Based on this photo I made my mother´s xmas present; handprinted cushions. This is my first attempt at printing rasterized photos.

During the weaving course, I also found time to do some knitting. It´s snowing in Bergen now, and it´s been really cold this week. So I started knitting at school, mostly just to take a break from weaving, and it turned out to be a pair of wrist warmers and a hat! 100% wool, so even though I knitted with thin yarn on thick needles (which gives a really "airy" and rough texture) they actually are really warm!

This summer my mum and I found this dress in the attic. I´ve shortened it about 12cm, so now it´s pretty much perfect for me!
My mum wore the dress for my big sister´s christening in 1980/1981, and it´s just as nice today. A new favorite dress, I´m sure!

WEAVING:

On Monday we started a course in weaving. We are learning all about different weaves, techniques, patterns and so on.
It has been a very interesting week, and I really enjoy weaving! There are so many options, you wouldn´t believe it!
Thursday I started a small sample on the damask weave, weaving with silk. For this weave you make a pattern based on a grid with 41 squares, and because of the way the weave is set up the pattern will repeat and mirror itself. It takes a lot of time since the thread is so thin, but it gives a really delicate result. For my first sample I made "space invaders":

After the silk, I moved on to a weaving with wool. This time I used a different weave (we have 8-10 different weaves!) where I make up a pattern repeat on a computer. The computer deals with each row in the pattern when I press the pedal, so all I have to do is shift the thread and keep track of the rows really. Here is the sample I am working on now:

LIVING IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF CHANGE:

The second week of the workshop with Rachel and Mathias we worked in groups, creating a big structure. The groups all worked on different subjects such as structure & space, atmosphere, animation and technology. I worked with the structure & space group, designing and building a huge structure out of fiberglass circles. An important keyword was "life", which lead us to the idea of creating a giant organ. We wanted to give the audience the feeling of being inside something living.
The last day we combined all the work from the different groups, resulting in a big structure with animated light wires, low frequent sounds and microphones where people could use their voice to create vibration and movement. Here´s some pictures from the process and the finished exhibition:

MAKING SOLAR CELLS:

I recently attended a two week long workshop with the London-based design duo Loop.ph. Rachel and Mathias showed a great deal of passion for their work, and they are very good at what they do! They certainly inspired me, and probably the rest of the group too. One of the things they showed us was how to make our own solar cells, with natural substances such as raspberries, blackberries and onion skin. Here´s some photos from the process:

MY PLACE:

Finally, my room is pretty much finished. After a few months hunting for furniture and stash, I´m actually quite happy with the interior. When I moved in I only had a bed and a wardrobe, then I found my lovely armchairs! A real bargain from Fretex (Salvation Army´s charity shop), just 200kr each! The dining chairs from the 60´s are from the same shop, 150kr for the pair, they are so nice and practical as well. Today I bought a cupboard/shelf thing, also Fretex, for just 50kr and filled it with all my books. I also found an old table in the basement, it was really dusty and covered in paint stains. But it looks great with a nice piece of retro fabric on top (actually a curtain from a charity shop). So now I have a place to eat, and most importantly; a place to sew!!!!!

I put some stuff on the walls as well, finally! Two of my canvasses on one wall, mirrors and a cosy picture (a bit kitsch) i got at a flee market on the opposite wall. I´m really pleased with the mix of styles, and the layout of the room. I think it has a nice retro feel to it, as well as a modern touch.

I SHOULD GOOGLE MYSELF MORE OFTEN:

Yesterday I googled myself, in lack of anything better to do. Usually the result is less then interesting, but this time google surprised me! I found a really nice review of the work I exhibited at New Designers on Julie Pople Designs´website:

"What makes this show so wonderful is that it is raw. By the time trends hit the high street they are often watered down versions of the original idea. Of course, they are also practical, commercial, and hopefully profitable. All of these designers have talent, the ones who make it will also have the ability to refine their ideas so that they are commercial without losing the spark that makes them stand out. But for this show it is the crude, powerful, unrefined work that triumphs over the conventional. To that end, Elisabeth Petch who took the trend for urban art and made it even more urban stood out. Her large canvasses of grimy, industrial signage were wonderful."

I´m taking care of my roomie´s hamster for a couple of weeks. This aggressive (believe it or not...) little creature is named Chanel, and is rather cute when she´s not biting my fingers... Chanel is asleep ALL day, and awake ALL night which means I´m awake most of the night as well...

Right now I´m working on a project where I use memories as my inspiration. All the memories are connected to my grandmother, and I have tried to reconstruct one of them and also combined two memories to make something new and surreal.

When Hanne and I went to Bestemor to eat dinner we used to look for the bird hidden in the surface pattern on the plate. We covered it with food, and then the first one to find it won the game.

My tutor asked me if I could combine some of the memories, so I did. In a very strange way. I combined cross stitches and peaches. A weird combination, but somehow quite nice as well.

A couple of weeks ago I went to London to exhibit my work at New Designers. The exhibition was in Islington, and the shops there are awesome! I found lots of great vintage shops, all located in the same area, so i was in heaven for a few hours! (Lost track of time.. woops!). I bought a lovely electric blue leather handbag from a woman at the market, and she pointed me in the direction of her husband's shop. And there I fell in love with this gorgeous 70's dress. I tried it on, perfect fit. It was meant to be...

I remember my grandmother had a dress like this, it was the same shape but darker blue. She bought it for my parents' wedding in 1978, and if the dress is still "alive" I would really love to wear it. It's too pretty to be boxed up somewhere, and I'm sure my grandmother would have loved to see me wear it as well.

For my final year project I designed customized surface patterns inspired by my surrounding. The idea was to design for bespoke interiors, using different materials. I wanted my desings to be edgy and expressive both one by one and as a group. These are my final 6 designs for my Degree Show.

"THE IDEAL PLACE"

I have applied for a bachelor degree in Textile Design at the National Academy of the Arts in Norway (Kunsthøgskolen i Bergen).
They invited me for an interview, which means i got through to round two! It also means that I had to do an assignment before the interview, on top of my final hand ins and assessments and building the degree show.. phew! The assignment was "visualize the ideal place, 2D and/or 3D. I tried to come up with a perfect place, but that is kind of impossible. The perfect place doesn't excist! But there are a few basic elements that I need to have around me in order to feel like I am in an ideal place; family, friends and good memories. I based my assignment on this idea, and made a dress with photos and expressive text. When I wear the dress I am physically surrounded by images of my family, my friends and images that bring back good memories. So when I wear it I am literally "in" the perfect place. If that makes any sense... (The National Academy is all about really arty stuff and alternative thinking.. or so I have heard!) Here is the result:

I went to the antiques market here in Wolves and I found this! I had one of these when I was a kid, and I LOVED it!! I probably still have it somewhere.. But when I saw a set of 3 reels (that's what the slides are called...) with photos from Norway I just had to buy it! "General views; Oslo, Stavanger, Bergen, Tr.heim..." So whenever I feel homesick, I just look at the fish market in Bergen, the fjords and the mountains, the national costumes etc. through my 3D viewmaster.

I made these slippers from my nephew. They are really easy to make, it only took a couple of hours to finish them. Ruben is 2 years old, and he LOVES cars, (or "bil/car" which is his norwegian/english version of the word.) so I decorated them with a car detail on the side. I also added small bells, just for the fun of it. Hope he likes them!

ANOTHER VINTAGE DRESS:

I went to Bergen for a few days during my easter holiday, and just had to have a look at Fretex! (the Salvation Army's secondhand shop). I found this dress, and fell in love with it. It is as far as i can see made out of silk, and it is also "homemade". The dress has a very simple shape, and a lovely pattern in dark blue/green tones. So now all i need is somewhere to wear it! Not exactly an everyday dress..

SELF PROMOTION

With just a few months left of Uni, I have to start sending out my job applications. This is my self-promo pack, with my business card and a digital version of my portfolio. And of course my application/CV! I have designed it all my self, and i am quite happy with both my logo and the rest.

I really wanted something new to wear for my friends birthday party, but couldn't find anything I liked (except a £40 top from oasis). So i just bought some purple fabric, some golden D-rings and some very plain cotton ribbons and made myself a top for less than £5! It was really easy to make, (even with a slightly temperamental sewing machine!) made it in a couple of hours without using a pattern. Think it turned out quite good actually, so I'm very pleased with it! In fact, I might just make another one in a different color. Maybe a dress?

Yes, I'm addicted to vintage dresses!! The red one was a bit to big, so I had to take it in.. and at the same time i made the straps cross over each other on the back.

A NEW DRESS, FROM AN OLD PATTERN:
I love making new dresses!! And I'm really happy with this one.
I made it from a vintage pattern, dated 1967. The pattern itself
wasn't that complicated, allthough I couldn't read the instruction
because it's written in French!

What I like about it, is that it's so simple and causual!
It's an everyday dress, and it look great with tights so
I can wear it when it's cold outside as well.

NEW VINTAGE DRESS!!
Bought this vintage dress at a secondhand shop in Leicester.
It has a really flattering shape, and I love the lace details!
I've cut off quite a bit, since I don't use long dresses so often...

I'M ADDICTED TO FABRICS...
Found some great fabrics in the market, so I just couldn't resist!
The blue one is a linen/cotton mix, and seems to be of good quality.
Want to use it for a dress, and use the floral one to make some nice details on it.
The one with the floral pattern is a Liberty fabric, cotton. I just love the pattern!! Also got a rusty coloured cord fabric, which probably will end up as a dress as well... And the nice buttons? From my sister's button box!

BACK TO THE 50's

This is a dress I made last summer. I used

a pattern from a really old Burda Magazine

to make the top, and then attatched it on

to a circle-cut skirt. I also made straps that

I can attatch whenever I want. The picture

shows the strapless version. I've worn it a

couple of times, and I'm really happy with it!

Re-Designed Retro "Granny's Dress"

I bought a cheap second-hand "granny's dress", just because I liked
the pattern on the fabric. Then I completly transformed it by
removing the sleeves and the collar...
